Answering Your Questions

What is a Doula?

A labor doula is a person who supports a woman during her pregnancy, labor, and birth of her child. She provides continuous physical and emotional support to the birthing woman and her partner while creating a safe space for the mother’s voice to be heard. A doula also serves as a bank of knowledge to help guide a woman through her pregnancy and birth options.

Why do I need a Doula?

Feeling totally supported during this life altering moment is paramount. Imagine excitingly looking forward to the birth of your baby because you feel so confident in the birth process.
The use of a doula in labor means:
50% reduction in cesarean section
25% shorter labor
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in oxytocin (pitocin) use
30% reduction in pain medication use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
Some small studies show that doulas lower the chance of postpartum depression.

Why can't my partner be my Doula?

Your partner can! However, if you have a trained doula at your birth, your partner won’t be tasked with remembering all of the labor positions for alleviating pain, making sure you’re hydrated and fed, monitoring your bathroom breaks, and remembering your birth plan. This frees your partner up to be just what they are: your partner. They can be by your side, relaxed, and be confident you are receiving the best care. You will not regret making an investment towards a beautiful birth experience. After all, don’t you deserve the most professional and supportive care possible?

Why do I need a birth plan?

This is your birth. There are many ways to tailor your birth to meet your wishes. With all of the different interventions that are possible, I will work as your personal research assistant to answer any questions you might have and to help educate you on your options. We will work together to figure out which interventions you are comfortable with and which you would like to avoid.
